RIVERSIDE - A trio of goals within a 13-minute span in the second half gave California Baptist men's soccer its biggest win of the season thus far, shutting out UC Santa Barbara 3-0 at home on Tuesday night. The Lancers improve to 2-4-1 on the year while the Gauchos fall to 4-4.
"Our very difficult non-conference schedule has tested us and forced us to grow, and tonight was the first time we put it all together, a nice glimpse of what we are capable of. As good as we were in the attack, the foundation needs to be a stingy commitment to not giving away goals. But most of all, we can't be satisfied. This is the standard we need to hold ourselves to while continuing to grow. We have another tough game on Saturday and then a bit of a break before what is a tough start to WAC league play. We are capable of a lot, but we have to keep getting better."
Freshman Drew Hardin tallied the game-winner in the 52nd minute courtesy of a solid advancing pass from Lincoln Aquino that developed into a well-delivered pass through traffic from Leo Mendez that found its way to Hardin despite the Goucho goalkeeper getting a fingertip on it.
The night's second goal came just seven minutes later when Aquino and Georg Bjarnason patiently set up a give-and-go that Aquino tucked just inside the far post for his second goal of the season.
The final insurance score came in the 65th minute as Uly Martinez and Luis Mueller maintained possession inside the 18-yard box, setting up Kieran Robson for the score that would officially put this one out of reach.
The Gauchos would threaten in the 68th minute, earning a penalty kick from a foul just steps into the box. Senior goalkeeper Nolan Premack set up in the exact same spot he did just 10 months ago when he saved the first PK of the WAC Tournament. Just as the San Jose shot taker chose, Alexis Ledoux went low and to the left, which Premack anticipated, and saved the penalty to secure his first clean sheet of 2023. His eighth career shutout moves him into sole possession of the Division I era record, and is tied for sixth all-time in the program.
CBU concludes the non-conference schedule with the Crosstown Showdown on Saturday night. The Riverside Derby will take place on the campus of UC Riverside this year, just nine miles east of CBU. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
