Lancers Kick Off WAC Play with 3-1 Loss in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. --- The Lancers kicked off the 2025 WAC season Saturday night with a visit north to San Jose State. A pair of first-half goals did the damage for the hosting Spartans, as CBU suffered its second loss of the season with a 3-1 final.
Saturday night's loss moves the Lancers to 5-2-2 overall, 0-1-0 in WAC play. The Spartans improved their record to 8-1-2 (1-0-0 WAC).
The Spartans netted their first goal of the night in the 17th minute of action, as Gilberto Rivera converted off an Angel Iniguez assist. Iniguez added to the SJSU lead with a strike of his own in the 28th minute, giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead that held through the intermission.
San Jose netted their third goal of the night in the 78th minute, again assisted by Iniguez, as his cross found Arnold Matshazi in the box for the goal. Matashazi now has seven goals, tying Blake D'Agostino for second most in the WAC.
D'Agostino did not score on Saturday, ending his seven-match goal streak, which is tied for the longest in CBU's Division I history.
"We started very well and probably should have taken an early lead, but the next thing you know, we are down from a short corner," said head coach Coe Michaelson. "Then we get a chance to equalize at the other end, and they go down and score a world-class goal off another corner. After that, I thought we started the second half well, but we kind of stalled out and they scored a third goal from a set piece."
Things looked bleak late for the Lancers, as they sat a minute away from their first shutout loss of the season. Just then, a lucky bounce benefited CBU as Drew Hardin's strike from the top of the 18 skipped past goalkeeper Edgar Guerra, giving Hardin his third goal of the season and negating a shutout.
Guerra led the Spartans with six saves. CBU's Hugo Do Rego totaled six saves as well.
The Lancers fired off 13 shots in the loss, two fewer than their opponents. CBU registered seven corner kicks to six from SJSU.
"San Jose is a very good team," added Michaelson. "But in the end, I think the biggest difference tonight was execution in key moments. They made their moments count and we didn't."
CBU will return to Riverside for its next two matches, as UNLV and Grand Canyon pay visits to the CBU Soccer Stadium later this week. The Lancers will host the Rebels on Thursday night for a 7:15 p.m. kickoff, and then the homestand concludes with GCU and CBU squaring off on Sunday at 5 p.m.
