CBU Collects A Pair of Wins at the Gary Troyer Tournament
9/29/2023 6:17:00 PM | Men's Water Polo
CLAREMONT – Friday proved to be a very successful day for CBU in the pool, and the Lancer men's water polo team defeated Wagner and Ottawa (AZ) 18-11 and 25-11, respectively. After a huge eight-goal effort on Friday, Bodhi Bowden would pull even with Cameron Cullen as the team leaders in goals scored with 27. That mark puts the Lancer men in a tie for fifth most in the conference.
GAME ONE: CBU 18 – WAGNER 11
The first contest of the weekend was all CBU from the start. The Lancers broke the game open with an offensive team clinic, posting seven goals by seven different Lancers in the opening eight minutes. That was followed up by a pair of masterclass efforts in the second period by Toby Bumgardner and Bowden, who each hit the hat trick mark before halftime. The Lancers would take a 13-7 lead into the break.
Both teams made defensive adjustments in the locker room, limiting the amount of scoring in the second half. That didn't stop Bowden as he put two more scores in to post his first career five-goal game.
GAME TWO: CBU 25 – OTTAWA 11
Game two on Friday was much the same as CBU jumped out to another sizeable lead, this time keeping their foot on the throttle through the final whistle. The Lancers were at least three goals better than Ottawa in each quarter and held the Spirit to just a pair in three of the four quarters.
Bowden again made his presence felt with his second first-half hat trick of the day, ultimately cashing in four goals against the Spirit. Freshman Collin White joined the scoring parade, recording his second career hat trick.
Friday's finale was highlighted by a massive offensive output by senior Cameron Cullen, who poured in five goals and assisted on another. Freshman Wyatt Bugbee impacted the stat sheet with a goal and a massive five-assist effort. Marcus Lodewyk added a pair of goals while facilitating another four, and Thomas de Wit posted a solid game with two goals and three assists.
Senior goalkeeper Trevor Benge started both games but shared cage time with William Whitstone and Trevor Alamilo. Benge and Whitstone would lead the staff with 10 saves each on the day.
The Lancers busy weekend is just getting started. CBU is set to play two more games on Saturday and Sunday at the Big West/WCC Challenge hosted by UC Irvine. Tomorrow, the Lancers will face off against #13 LMU at 8:00 a.m. and #9 Long Beach State at 1:45 p.m. at Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine.
