Lancers Shutout UTSA in Scoreless Draw
9/3/2023 3:05:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RIVERSIDE--- California Baptist University's women's soccer team welcomed UTSA to CBU Soccer Stadium for a Sunday matinee match, and both squads walked away with a nil-nil draw. The scoreless game was very physical from both sides, as CBU and UTSA combined for a total of 46 fouls during the 90 minutes. The Lancer's record moves to 3-1-1 on the season.
The evenly matched squads began their physical game from the start of the whistle, with the first foul occurring just before the first-minute mark. The Lancers earned two corner kicks through the run of play but could not capitalize on the opportunities. CBU fired off three shots in total before halftime, with their best chance coming in the 39th minute with a pair of shots from Marcella Brooks and Lauryn White that UTSA's keeper saved.
With both teams frustrated, the physicality of the match only increased through the second period. CBU found another opportunity towards the end of the game as Lourdes Bosch nailed a shot to the bottom left corner but could not slip it past the Roadrunner's keeper. UTSA followed not even a minute later with a low-driven shot against Noa Schumacher, who came up with the save and secured the 0-0 result.
"We faced off against an NCAA tournament team from last year and it was a gritty battle from the opening whistle. I'm proud of the team for fighting through adversity throughout the game," remarks Kristen St. Clair. "On the day, our defense was very good. Offensively despite creating attacking opportunities our execution and decision making in the attacking half was too slow for our standards. We limited ourselves by not executing as quickly as we are capable of. While we still took a point from the game we're disappointed to leave two points on the table we should have had."
The Roadrunners ended their day on the pitch with nine shots and just two on goal, while the Lancers came away with six shots and three on frame. Schumacher tallied two saves, and the UTSA keeper earned three of her own. Both squads also picked a pair of yellow cards during the 90 minutes; Mackenzie Kaufhold and Sabrina Hillyer for UTSA ,and Lourdes Bosch and Jana Heinen for CBU. The match also marks the second shutout of the season, and week, for California Baptist.
The Lancers will now head to Eugene, Oregon to face the Ducks on Thursday, September 7th, at 7:00 p.m.
