CBU Hosts Cal in Midweek Tilt

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University men's soccer hosted another quality opponent, the California Golden Bears, on Thursday night. The Lancers struck first, but the Bears netter a pair to take the win in Riverside, dropping CBU to 0-3-1 on the year while Cal remains unbeaten at 3-0-2.
"That's extremely disappointing because I thought we were largely very good tonight," remarked Head Coach Coe Michaelson after the match. He added, "It had the feel of a winning performance, but obviously the nature of those goals against was unfortunate. The message is the same, repeat the good parts, learn from the mistakes, and come back better next game."
Leo Mendez opened the scoring with a fantastic strike in the 25th minute from an assist by freshman Drew Hardin, his first collegiate point.
The Golden Bears leveled the score five minutes later off a deflected clearance and hit the game-winner late in the second half in the 78th minute.
The Lancers were plus-three on corner kick opportunities, but the Bears held 14-11 and 6-3 advantages in shots and shots on goals.
Freshman goalkeeper Dorian Drucks added four more saves to his freshman tally, bringing it up to 18 through four games. With tonight's goal, Mendez takes the point lead on the Lancer roster with three, while Harden's assist makes him the fifth Lancer to make it onto the scoresheet.
The Lancers' schedule stays tough this weekend as CSUN comes to Riverside. The reigning Big West regular season champions come into Sunday's game unbeaten at 2-0-3 and coming off a 3-1 victory over WAC foe UNLV. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at CBU Soccer Stadium.
