RIVERSIDE--- The #15 California Baptist men's water polo team welcomed #18 Loyola Marymount on Wednesday evening for the first West Coast Conference game of the season, which saw CBU emerge victorious with a 13-8 win. The Lancers improve to 15-8 overall and continue to build on a seven-game winning streak while improving to 1-0 in conference play.
Alex Righetti got things going from the get-go and found the back of the net early to give CBU an early lead. California Baptist would ultimately unload five goals on the Lions in the first period, but LMU stayed close with a trio of goals to put themselves within two of the lead. The Lancers slowly began pulling away and dented the twine thrice in the second period to lead by three heading into halftime.
William Whitstone came up big in the third period and limited the Lions to just a single goal during the third set of eight minutes, ending the evening with seven saves. Collin White and Andrea Nuzzo also played a significant role on defense, tallying a pair of field blocks each to help stave off LMU to just eight goals. The final period of the evening saw a trio of goals from CBU to secure the 13-8 win.
Toring Stanley put away a hat trick against the Lion's defense, leading the Lancers offensively. Righetti and Bodhi Bowden followed suit with a brace each, while Logan Puhl and Rafa Martinez solidified CBU's defense with three steals each.
The Lancers will now head to Santa Clara for a weekend tournament at the end of October before continuing on in WCC play against the Air Force.
