CBU Stumbles Against Wolverines in Utah

OREM, UT--- The California Baptist women's soccer program returned to Utah as they battled the Wolverines of Utah Valley on Thursday night in their first of two road matches this week. UVU would snag three points from the Lancers after claiming a 4-1 win to maintain their perfect Western Athletic Conference record. CBU moves to 3-2 in conference play and is now 7-5-2 on the year.

"This was one of those games where the score was not completely indicative of the match overall. I thought we played well in the first half, and inconsistently in the second half," remarked Head Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We created some very good scoring opportunities hitting the post multiple times, half inch inside and this is a very different game. We'll learn from this and get better. Now we turn our focus to our next opponent".

It was an offensive-heavy match between both squads, with over 30 shots taken between the two in the first half. UVU struck first in the 13th minute, courtesy of Faith Webber. The Lancers continued to battle and rattled off 12 shots to test the Wolverine goalkeeper but were unable to find the back of the net. CBU would go into the second half down by one.

Utah Valley added to their lead in the opening minutes of the second half before the match was delayed for nearly an hour due to lightning in the area. The Wolverines would find the back of the net again during the opening moments after returning from the delay, putting themselves ahead by three. CBU continued to press in an effort not to get shut out in Utah, and Lauryn White delivered a goal from the corner of the 18-yard box off a pass from Ava Westlund to put the Lancers on the board. The Wolverines would capitalize on another opportunity in front of the net not even a minute later to add insurance to their win. The loss was the first time the Lancer's backline allowed more than two goals in a single match this season.

The Lancers will now turn their attention to their final WAC road match against Seattle U on Sunday afternoon before returning home to welcome Grand Canyon to close regular season play.
