RIVERSIDE - California Baptist men's soccer suffered a bitter loss on Sunday night, falling to the Seattle U Redhawks, 1-0, in the final seconds of a hotly-contested match. CBU's record moves to 3-5-5 overall and 2-2-1 in Western Athletic Conference play as a result. The Redhawks are now 4-1-1 in the WAC, edging unbeaten San Diego State atop the table, 13 points to 12.
"We did the work for 89 minutes to take something home today, and given a few clear chances, we were unfortunate not to have a lead, but we really lost our focus at the end. With possession of the ball and 35 seconds left, all we needed to do was get everyone forward and put the final ball into their half, but there is no scenario where the ball should ever end up back in our half before the final whistle," Head Coach Coe Michaelson stated after the match. "It's a harsh lesson for the boys because I really don't think we deserved to lose, but now we need to move on and go get a result at GCU."
CBU dominated possession throughout the match, though Seattle more than doubled the Lancers' shot count, 19-8, for the game. The Lancers had shining opportunities throughout, including a shot from Luka Kozomara in the 31st minute that just curved a little too far left or the blocked set piece opportunity in the 80th minute that was inches outside the 18-yard box.
The Redhawks continued to push and found their winner after 89 minutes and 43 seconds of action. They scored off a cross that was batted around for a bit and eventually bounced its way into the net. Prior to that, Lancer goalkeeper Hugo Do Rego had stopped eight shots, giving him a total of 15 saves on the busy weekend between the pipes.
CBU is back on the road next week for their final road trip of the season, taking on Grand Canyon on Thursday, October 24, before heading to Edinburg, Texas, to battle it out with UTRGV on Sunday, October 27.
