POMONA, CA--- The California Baptist Lancers returned to Los Angeles County for the second day of the Gary Troyer Tournament, facing off against Long Beach State and Redlands. The Lancers ultimately split the day, falling to LBSU 18-13 and picking an 18-11 win over Redlands to end the four-game weekend. CBU went 3-1 at the Gary Troyer Tournament, moving to 9-8 on the year.
CBU 13 - LBSU 18
Long Beach came out hot from the very first period, building a lead that CBU would never be able to catch. The Beach put away six goals in the first six minutes while limiting the Lancers to just a single goal. Kevin Rosa's squad had a much better second quarter, where they found the back of the net six times with the help of a pair of goals from both Andrea Nuzzo and Caleb Teraoka. Down by four goals after the half, CBU continued to chip away at the Beach's lead and dented the twine twice in the third. However, another offense-heavy fourth period from LBSU would cement the win for the Long Beach squad, ending the match 18-13.
Nuzzo impressed with four goals against the Beach, while Teraoka put away a hat trick and earned a pair of assists during the first game of the day.
CBU 18 - Redlands 11
The Lancers wasted no time taking control of Saturday's second game against Redlands, scoring three of the first four goals, all scored and assisted by different players. Nuzzo posted a pair of goals in the first period, as did Brodhi Bowden, as CBU muscled out a slim 6-4 lead at the end of the first. The Lancers would net another half-dozen goals in the second period and hold the Bulldogs to just three, extending the lead to 12-7 by halftime.
Redlands made up some ground in the third as their defense clamped down and held the Lancers to just two goals as they added three of their own to bring the score to a 14-10 CBU advantage. The Lancers would answer with authority in the fourth, scoring the first four goals of the quarter to reach an 18-10 advantage and would ride that lead until the final whistle.
Bowden and Logan Puhl each posted four goals with one assist to lead CBU with five points against the Bulldogs. Deuces were wild for Toring Stanley in game two on Saturday as he posted two goals, two assists, and two steals, while Teraoka picked up three more assists and a goal. Trevor Alamilo and Trent De Leuuw split time in the cage in game two, making seven and three saves, respectively.
CBU will now turn its attention to its first home game on Wednesday against UC Irvine at 6 p.m. before hosting the annual Joust Tournament this weekend, welcoming ten squads for 16 games in two days.
