Lancers Lock Down #5 UCI to Open Home Schedule

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist men's water polo team took down #5 UC Irvine on Wednesday evening for their biggest win of the season thus far. The Lancers came out hot from the start, and a season-high five goals from Bodhi Bowden led CBU to a 12-11 victory. California Baptist improves to 10-8 on the season, while the Anteaters drop to 9-7 on the year.

After nearly three minutes of scoreless action, UC Irvine found the first goal of the game, which was quickly matched by Andrea Nuzzo to begin what would be four periods of extremely competitive water polo. The first period ended with CBU ahead 3-2, but three goals from the Anteaters in the second quarter and another two from the Lancers knotted the game at five apiece heading into halftime.

Bowden came alive in the second half of the game, denting the twine twice in quick succession to begin the third period. He would score again just before the quarter ended to keep CBU ahead by a lone goal before the final period. Another evenly matched eight minutes saw just four goals in total, with each team tallying a pair to secure a CBU victory. Bowden tied his season-high record of five goals in a single match with the last time the squad played the Anteaters, where he also picked up five goals. The senior sits comfortably as the leading goal-scorer for the Lancers with 47 on the season.

California Baptist will now turn its attention to this weekend as they host The Joust, a 16-game event at the Lancer Aquatic Center. CBU will play in five total games this weekend, kicking off with an exhibition match against Golden West on Friday morning. The complete weekend schedule can be found here.
