ARLINGTON, TX--- The California Baptist University volleyball team advanced to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals on Thursday night and are set to take on the Regular Season Champions and tournament host, the UT Arlington Mavericks.
UTA will be the matchup for the Lancers after they dispatched Abilene Christian handily in the late match of the WAC quarterfinals. The Mavericks went undefeated in the conference schedule at 16-0 and were an impressive 26-2 during the regular season. The 26-2 mark was the fifth-best in the entire country this season, and the Mavericks found themselves 52nd in the national RPI in the most recent poll. UTA has found resounding success inside the friendly confines of the College Park Center, where they went 11-0 this season and have not lost since October 30, 2023.
CBU arguably had the most success against the top-seeded Mavericks during the course of conference play, pushing them to five sets in Riverside in September and then to four sets in Arlington in early November. No other team in the conference competed in more sets against the Mavericks than CBU this season and they are one of three teams to take a set off of them at home this season.
CBU's win over Utah Tech in the WAC quarterfinals was the program's first-ever win in the WAC Tournament in its three tries, and they were able to do it in convincing fashion in straight sets. The Lancers are one of the hottest teams in the conference heading into postseason play and are winners of seven of their last nine. Reigning WAC Libero of the Year Amanda Darling is a large reason why and her fellow All-WAC recipients Madison Gilliland and Nicole Mauser have been critical to CBU's recently found success. On top of the All-WAC honorees, Mia Jerue and Kali Wolf have been playing lights out on the outsides, with Wolf leading CBU's offense in the quarterfinals with 13 kills.
