RIVERSIDE--- California Baptist University has announced the hiring of Trevor Johnson as the 14th Head Coach of women's volleyball. The Cerritos, California native will be returning to California after spending the past season as an assistant coach at the University of Georgia.
"Lancer Nation is excited to welcome home Coach Trevor Johnson," said Vice President for Athletics Dr. Micah Parker. "Trevor is a fit for our mission of Honoring Christ Through Excellence in Athletics and his experience of recruiting at the highest level will be invaluable to our program."
The return to Riverside will be familiar territory for coach Johnson, who spent four seasons on the Lancer men's volleyball team and received his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 2005 from CBU. Johnson was a four-year starter who helped the Lancers win back-to-back NAIA National Championships in 2004 and 2005. Johnson racked up 3,820 assists for CBU and was the NAIA National Championships assists leader from 2003 to 2004. Johnson was also an assistant coach at CBU from 2007-2009 and from 2010-2011, compiling a 127-39 record for the men's and women's programs. As a coach for the Lancers, Johnson helped lead the men to the 2011 NAIA title and guided the women to the NAIA National semifinals in 2008.
"I am incredibly excited and humbled to accept this opportunity at CBU," remarked Johnson. "CBU's values align closely with my own and I am looking forward to contributing to a culture of excellence and faith. My goal is to inspire our athletes to grow in their athletic abilities while also nurturing their character and faith. My family and I are excited to be coming home. I want to thank President Dr. Ronald L. Ellis and Vice President for Athletics Dr. Micah Parker for this tremendous opportunity."
Johnson's coaching experience is vast, having spent time as the head coach at Liberty University, the recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M, the lead assistant coach at Baylor, and as a coach and director at Concordia Irvine. While at Georgia last season, Johnson helped the Bulldogs upset #16 Florida in an SEC match and helped train future Team USA middle blocker Sophie Fisher to being named First Team All-SEC and finishing second in the conference in blocks.
While at Liberty, Johnson amassed 89 wins as the head man and led the Flames to the 2022 ASUN regular season title, and was named the ASUN Coach of the Year. Johnson coached 14 All-Conference honorees during his time in Lynchburg, Virginia, and had the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history in 2020. As the recruiting coordinator/assistant coach at Texas A&M, Johnson oversaw a top-20 recruiting class in 2017 and was a part of a team that reached the NCAA First Round. Johnson was also a large part of Concordia Irvine volleyball, serving as the program director, head coach, and assistant coach throughout his tenure. During his time with the Eagles, Johnson coached seven All-Americans at the NAIA level, led the men to an NAIA National Championship in 2013, and led the women to an undefeated season in 2012, which also resulted in a National Championship.
"Trevor Johnson is a great coach and a wonderful person. He has the gift of inspiring and empowering his players, and he's extremely good at giving correction to his athletes without causing resentment. I personally loved coaching with Trevor. What a great hire for CBU, and congratulations to Coach Johnson and the CBU volleyball program," said former Texas A&M Head Coach Laurie Corbelli.
"Congratulations on a fantastic hire. Trevor is an alum, a great coach, a leader, and a man of faith. This is a perfect fit," remarked Pittsburgh Head Coach Dan Fisher, who worked with Coach Johnson at Concordia Irvine.
A national search is now underway to complete Coach Johnson's staff.
