CAMBRIDGE, MA --- The California Baptist men's water polo team opened their season on Saturday afternoon in Massachusetts at the Bruno Classic, where they battled #15 Harvard and #14 Fordham. The first game of the day was highly competitive and was a nail-biter down the final seconds that saw Harvard come away with an 11-10 victory. Forham came out strong from the first sprint and secured their second win of the year, 23-12, moving the Lancers to 0-2 on the young season.
HARVARD 11 - CBU 10
California Baptist jumped out to an early lead against the Crimson on Saturday morning, tallying four goals across nine shots to just two goals by Harvard in the first. The Crimson were much more aggressive offensively in the second quarter and found the back of the cage three times while limiting CBU to just one goal for a tied score heading into halftime.
The Lancers put away three of their four shots in the third quarter to take the lead yet again, but a competitive push from Harvard in the fourth saw four goals to CBU's three and secured the win for the Ivy League university. Toring Stanley put away a pair of goals during the match while picking up four assists that helped keep the Lancers in the game. Bodhi Bowen led the squad with a hat trick, while Alex Righetti and true freshman Andrea Nuzzo picked up a brace.
FORDHAM 23 - CBU 12
After taking down #20 Brown with over 20 goals, Fordham continued the pattern into their second match of the day. The Rams quickly put up four goals in the first quarter, which were met with a pair of goals from Nuzzo. California Baptist was limited to just three goals for the next 12 minutes, while Fordham tallied 13 goals in the second and third periods. CBU continued to chip away at the extensive lead in the game's final minutes and converted six goals to help cut the lead to 11. Righetti picked up a hat trick, while Logan Puhl and Nuzzo earned a pair of goals each.
The Lancers will now turn their attention to the second day of the Bruno Classic and will open Sunday morning against Iona and end the day against #20 Brown.
