WALNUT, CA--- The California Baptist University wrestling partnered with Beat the Streets as they hosted #18 Arizona State at MT. SAC College on Sunday afternoon for a BIG 12 tilt.
This would be the first-ever meeting between the two programs as the Sun Devils enter their first season in the BIG 12. The Sun Devils would be the victors in the dual, winning seven of the ten matches and getting bonus points in four. The loss drops the Lancers to 2-2 in BIG duals and 5-4 overall, while the Sun Devils get their first win in conference action and their fourth dual win of the season.
The dual began at 157lbs, with Darren Green of CBU going against Michael Kilic of the Sun Devils. ASU got on the board first with bonus points, earning the major decision 17-5. ASU would compound their early lead with a fall at 165lbs coming from #14 Nicco Ruiz to make the score 10-0 in favor of the visitors.
Carter Schmidt would get the scoring started for the Lancers at 174lbs and would begin a 3-0 match run for CBU. Schmidt would dominate the second period against Joseph Manfretti, scoring a takedown off a single leg trip and would earn a quartet of back points off the move to take an 8-0 early lead on Manfretti. Schmidt would tack on three more points via forcing stalls and riding time to take the bout 11-1 and give CBU four points.
Nathan Haas would be the next Lancer to get on the scoreboard at 184 lbs as he battled against Shay Addison. Haas was at a disadvantage early, surrendering a first-period takedown, but would tie the match up in the second period with a crucial takedown with just under 20 seconds to tie the bout heading into the final period. Haas would get a reversal to begin the third period to take his first lead of the match and would display excellent defensive wrestling to ride out the 6-5 victory over Addison. Eli Sheeren would conclude the 3-0 match run for CBU with a sudden victory win over Damion Schunke at 197lbs. Sheeren and Schunke did not have much action throughout the first three periods, as the two wrestlers entered the overtime knotted at two apiece. Sheeren would circle behind Schunke to score a quick takedown in the overtime period, resulting in the 5-2 victory in CBU's favor as the dual headed to intermission tied at ten points apiece.
ASU's strongest portion of its lineup was up next in the dual, a lineup that featured four ranked wrestlers, including two in the top 5 in the country. The Sun Devils would begin the stretch with a fall at heavyweight by #5 Cohlton Schultz. Schultz, a four-time All-American, and four-time PAC-12 Champion would put ASU back in front at 16-10 after the pin of Tristan Kemp. Up next for ASU was the reigning NCAA National Champion at 125lbs, Richard Figueroa, who would take on Mitchell Neiner for the Lancers. Neiner did an admirable job against the National champ, avoiding giving up bonus points, and only surrendered a decision 7-1.
The Sun Devils would get two falls in the final three matches to bring the final tally to 34-10 in favor of the Tempe-based squad.
