CBU Claims Four Match Wins Against SIUE on Friday Night

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University wrestling team competed in its penultimate home dual of the season on Friday night as they welcomed in the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars in a non-conference match. SIUE would come away with the 25-14 victory after winning six of the ten matches on the evening.

The dual began at 184 lbs, with redshirt freshman Mason Espinoza taking the mat in a dual for just the second time this season against Deron Pulliam of SIUE. SIUE would get on the board first with a 9-4 decision at 184 lbs, but CBU would immediately answer back with Eli Sheeren at 197 lbs. Sheeren battled Nick Nosler to a 1-1 draw at the end of three periods, with the two wrestlers exchanging escape points. In sudden victory, Sheeren would do an excellent job of scrambling against Nosler and would eventually put himself in a position to score to secure the 4-1 victory and tie the match at three apiece.

CBU would take its first lead of the dual at heavyweight as Tristan Kemp registered three takedowns and nearly three minutes of riding time over Bryson Buhk. Kemp would secure bonus points and win the match 13-4 to give CBU a 7-3 advantage. SIUE would regain the momentum with a decision at 125 lbs and a forfeit at 133 lbs to give them the lead back at 12-7. SIUE would further extend its lead by earning bonus points in the next three matches, including a fall at 141 lbs, to give them a commanding 21-7 lead.

Drayden Morton and Daniel Manbog would make things interesting at 157 and 165 lbs, respectively, as they would each claim victory. Morton started the rally with a 9-1 major decision over Brock Woodcock to bring CBU within ten points of the Cougars. Manibog had one of the most exciting finishes of the evening at 165lbs as he battled Bradley Gillum. Manibog fell behind after two periods but would have a dominant fourth period, including a pair of takedowns and an escape to eke out the 7-5 decision. Despite the win at 165 lbs, the damage was already done in the early matches, and SIUE would claim the victory at 174 lbs to round up the final score of 25-14.
