OREM, UT--- The California Baptist University wrestling team traveled to the Beehive State for its first dual in 2025, as they took on #25 Utah Valley at Lockhart Arena. The Lancers would win four matches in the dual, but it would be the Wolverines walking away with the 23-14 win.
The loss ended a four-match winning streak for the Lancers and was their first loss in BIG 12 action after defeating Air Force and West Virginia in their previous two BIG 12 sessions.
The dual began at 149lbs as true freshman Paul Kelly looked to continue his hot start for the Lancers. Kelly would do that and more as he earned CBU bonus points right out of the gate with a dominant 21-3 victory to earn the technical fall in the third period. Kelly had three takedowns in the first period alone and would earn the five points with back points in the final period. Kelly is now 7-1 in duals as a freshman. The Wolverines would erase the early deficit with bonus points of their own in the ensuing two bouts, earning major decisions in both to take the lead 8-5.
Carter Schmidt and Nathan Haas would give the lead back to the visitors with decisions at 174 and 184 lbs. Schmidt's takedown in the second period was the difference in his victory as he defeated Mark Takara of Utah Valley 5-1. For Haas, he would prove why he is ranked with a 10-5 victory over Caleb Uhlnehopp to bring his dual record to 7-1. The Wolverines would knot the score up at 11 apiece after Kael Bennie earned a decision win in a hotly-contested battle against Eli Sheeren at 197lbs.
The momentum would swing in UVU's favor at heavyweight as they would earn a fall to take a commanding six-point advantage over the Lancers. Hunter Leake would return to the lineup for the Lancers with a bang at 133lbs, earning his first ranked win of the season as he bested #32 Kase Mauger 2-1 in a decision to force the dual to come down to the final bout. In the final match, Utah Valley would register a pin and claim the match 23-14 and protect its home mat.
