OREM, Utah --- Fresh off their first victory of the WAC season, the Lancers are jetting east to Orem for a highly anticipated conference showdown with Utah Valley. With both teams entering the weekend as top 50 programs in the Division I RPI, Saturday's showdown will have significant implications for conference tournament seeding.
The Lancers have ones across the board through three WAC matches, sitting 1-1-1 after their 1-0 shutout of Grand Canyon on Sunday. Utah Valley, which was a top 20 program in the United Soccer Coaches' Poll earlier this season, sits at 2-1-0 through three conference matches.
CBU is receiving votes in the latest poll; it's their third time doing so this season. GCU is the only other WAC team to receive votes in the newest ranking release.
A late first-half goal from sophomore William Lawson was all of the scoring for the Lancers on Sunday night. With less than 20 seconds remaining in the first half, Lawson headed home a corner kick from Tizian Marth to give CBU the halftime edge. Lawson was later named the WAC Defender of the Week.
Utah Valley comes into Saturday night's meeting fresh off 2-1 victories against Air Force (Oct. 9) and San Jose State (Oct. 11). The Wolverines opened the conference season with a 3-1 loss to Grand Canyon.
Those three goals by Grand Canyon were the most surrendered by the Wolverines this season. In fact, UVU has allowed only six goals through ten matches, and they opened the season with shutout performances in their first six contests. Goalkeeper Kolby Sessions leads the WAC in shutouts and ranks second with his .828 save percentage.
Opposing Sessions will be CBU's Hugo Do Rego, coming off his third shutout performance of the season. Do Rego leads the WAC with 47 saves and sits fourth with a .783 save percentage.
Utah Valley is one of three teams with two conference wins through three matches. Utah Tech remains the only unbeaten program, sitting 2-0-1 at the top of the table.
Saturday night's match is slated for 5 p.m. (PST) and will be streamed live on ESPN+. After their visit to Orem, the Lancers will return to Riverside for training before hitting the road again to visit the Air Force Academy (Oct. 23).
The Lancers will be back in Riverside for their final home match of the regular season on Oct. 26 when Utah Tech comes to town. Tickets are on sale HERE.
