Marth’s Brace Lifts Lancers to Victory in Orem

OREM, Utah --- Sophomore Tizian Marth netted the first two goals of his collegiate career, as his brace provided half of CBU's scoring in a 4-1 victory over Utah Valley. The win is the second in a row for the Lancers, as they improve their WAC record to 2-1-1.
"We knew coming in this was a very difficult game, but also a very meaningful one in terms of how it would affect the WAC table and the RPI," said head coach Coe Michaelson. "We challenged the guys to bring a big game mentality, and they absolutely did that. We knew we could have been better for periods of time in the second half, but that is being hypercritical, especially when you walk away from this place with a 4-1 quad one victory."
Both programs entered the match sitting in the top five of the Division I RPI. Utah Valley drops to 2-2-0 in WAC action with the loss.
Marth netted the night's first goal, a chipper in the 13th minute off of a Nico Coope assist. UVU equalized the score with a goal eight minutes later, but back came the Lancers with an answer in the 30th minute off the foot of Felix Ezekwuka. Ezekwuka was knocked down just outside of the 18-yard box, but he regained his footing before driving toward goal and placing the ball past the reach of UVU's Sebastian Lovendal.
The Lancers took their 2-1 advantage into the intermission and wasted little time adding to it, as Stavros Charalampous converted on a rebound attempt ten yards out to push the lead to 3-1.
An additional insurance tally came with seven minutes remaining, thanks to Marth, who wrapped up his first collegiate brace off an assist from Ezekwuka and Uly Martinez.
"I'm really proud of the whole group, but tonight our goal scorers deserve some praise," added Michaelson. "(Charalampous) is one of the best sixes in the country, and he just scored his fourth goal. Felix has been one of the best wingers in the country in one-on-one attacking moments and counter pressing, and it's so deserving to add more goals to what he as done."
Michaelson also spoke about Marth, noting, "Tizian has fought his way back into the side recently, and came up big with two goals tonight."
Goalkeeper Hugo Do Rego also did his part in the victory, totaling three saves. Lovendal finished with six.
The Lancers will be on the road for their next match as well, coming on October 23 when they visit the Air Force Academy.
