SANTA CLARA, CA--- In a nail-biting match at the Julian Fraser Memorial Pool, #12 California Baptist men's water polo defeated #20 Brown University 17-16 on Friday afternoon. The Lancers came out strong from the first quarter and fired six goals that would ultimately propel them to the victory. CBU moves to 19-7 on the year and improves their winning streak to nine during their bye week of West Conference play.
CBU jumped out to an early lead with six goals in the first period, highlighted by standout performances from Andrea Nuzzo, who scored three goals in quick succession. Brown responded with four goals of their own, keeping the pressure on the Lancers. The #20 squad stalled the offense from CBU in the second period after limiting the Lancers to two while firing four of their own for an 8-8 score at the half.
CBU found its rhythm again in the third period, denting the twine four more times before Brown added five goals to set the stage for a thrilling final quarter. The final frame saw both teams exchange leads, but it was CBU that managed to hold on, thanks to a pair of goals from Nuzzo.
The win over #20 Santa Clara marks the Lancers' seventh ranked-win this season and the program's 19th win overall this season. CBU will now prepare for a pair of games tomorrow as the Julian Fraser Tournament continues.
