#12 Lancers Fall to #14 LMU on Thursday Evening

LOS ANGELES, CA--- It was heartbreak in Los Angeles on Thursday evening as the #12 California Baptist men's water polo squad suffered its first loss in West Coast Conference play to #14 Loyola Marymount in an uncharacteristic 17-13 loss. CBU struggled to outscore its opponent through every quarter and dropped to a 3-1 record, snapping its 11-game win streak.
LMU took an early lead, scoring four goals in the first period despite the Lancers answering back with quick strikes, including a goal from Rafa Martinez. The second period saw the Lions maintain their momentum, outscoring CBU by a two-goal margin. As the game progressed, the Lancers found their rhythm in the third period, thanks in part to Andrea Nuzzo, who tallied five goals on the evening. However, LMU's consistent offense proved to be the difference on Thursday evening.
In the final frame, CBU came out strong and dug into the home team's lead after scoring four goals, but LMU secured its win with another five-goal period. The Lion goalkeeper had the night of his career and stunned the Lancers with 12 saves to earn the WCC victory.
The Lancers are back in action on Sunday afternoon as they head to Northern California to compete against #8 University of the Pacific in another WCC match.
