RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University men's water polo team concluded its regular season with a thrilling 12-11 victory over the Cal State Fullerton Titans in Riverside.
The rainy conditions did not deter the Lancers as they would overcome a three-goal deficit to defeat their future Big West foe Cal State Fullerton. The Lancers would celebrate its two seniors, Alex Righetti and Hayes Beamon, before the match for Senior Day and would award its two seniors with a thriller to get to 22-10 this season. The 20+ wins mark the fifth consecutive season the Lancers have won at least 20 games.
The Lancers would strike quickly with two goals in the opening couple of minutes courtesy of Andrea Nuzzo and Phil Portisch, but the Titans would finish out the period with three straight goals to take a narrow lead. Fullerton would extend its lead to as many as three in the second period, but CBU would continue to fight and would get within one goal at halftime via a Michael Abshier goal.
CBU continued to play from behind through the majority of the second half, with CSUF staying one step ahead of them at almost every turn. The game would turn in CBU's favor following a Paulo Hernandez steal that he would take all the way and score off of to tie the game at 11 apiece in the closing minutes of the third period. The momentum shifted from that point on, and the Lancers would regain the lead a few seconds later when Collin White scored on a power play with the assist from Righetti.
Fullerton tied the game again in the early half of the fourth period on a power play opportunity, but Wyatt Bugbee would make that a short-lived tie and found the back of the net on the ensuing possession to give CBU the lead back. CBU's defense would take it from there and came up with several stops over the final four and a half minutes, culminating in a steal from Bugbee on the final possession that sealed the 12-11 victory for the Lancers.
CBU got multiple goals from multiple players, with Bugbee, Hernandez, and Abshier all depositing two goals in the match. Abshier was the team leader in points, as he also dished out a game-high four assists to fuel the CBU offense. Tanner McCreary came up with big stops late in the game and would wind up with seven saves and a steal in the full 32 minutes of action between the posts.
The Lancers will now turn their attention to the West Coast Conference Tournament, which will take place in Colorado Springs. CBU will face LMU in the opening round on Thursday, November 21.
