RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University wrestling team welcomed in the #29 Wyoming Cowboys to the Fowler Events Center on Saturday evening as they battled it out in a conference dual in Riverside.
The Lancers would win four matches, including two upsets, but an abundance of bonus points from the Cowboys would secure the dual for the visitors 28-12. The loss drops CBU to 0-3 for the season while Wyoming wins its second dual of the season.
The dual began at 125 pounds with the Cowboys earning bonus points early, thanks to a first-period fall, for a 6-0 lead. Wyoming would tack on three more points at 133lbs as Luke Willochell would narrowly escape Remy Murillo. Murillo mounted a furious comeback in the third period that included registering three takedowns and an escape, but the early damage done by Willochell would hold, and he would eke out the 19-13 decision victory.
Facing a 9-0 deficit, the Lancers would win four straight matches to take the lead over the Cowboys. CBU got its first of four wins from #33 Jesse Vasquez. For Vasquez, it was his first dual victory as a Lancer after a long, decorated career with Arizona State. Vasquez registered a first-period takedown and a clutch reversal in the third period to take the match by decision 6-1 over John Alden. Paul Kelly would be the next winner for the Lancers and would be one of two wrestlers to earn ranked victories for the blue and gold. Kelly picked up five takedowns in an action-packed bout against #23 Gabe Willochell, who is a 3x NCAA qualifier. Kelly's final takedown with 56 seconds left in the third period would secure the 17-15 decision and was the first ranked win of the year for the Lancers.
Drayden Morton would be the second Lancer in a row to pick up a ranked win as he took down 3x NCAA qualifier #16 Jared Hill of the Cowboys in the 157lb bout. Morton would do his work early with a first-period takedown and would ride out Hill for nearly the entirety of the frame. Hill made a late push and would secure a takedown with 12 seconds left in the third period to tie the match at four apiece, but Morton's 2:03 seconds of riding time from the first period would be the difference for Morton's 5-4 decision over Hill. Gabe Schumm would be the final victor for the Lancers with a win in sudden victory over Sloan Swan. The victory would put CBU ahead 12-9.
Wyoming would win the final four matches of the dual, including getting bonus points from #11 Eddie Neitenbach, #5 Joey Novak, and #26 Christian Carroll to pick up the 28-12 victory in Riverside.
