CLINTON, SC--- The California Baptist University wrestling team made a little history on Monday evening as they completed their largest dual victory over a DI opponent against Presbyterian.
The 42-3 victory for the Lancers was not only its largest over a DI opponent in program history, but the 42 points were the most scored in a dual for the Lancers since 2022, and was its largest overall victory since 2022 when it defeated Vanguard 47-7. The win was the first dual victory of the season for CBU and was its first road dual of the season.
The dual began at 141lbs with Jesse Vasquez matching up against Ryan Luna. Vasquez kicked off the dual with a third-period tech fall, registering four takedowns in the first period alone. The tech fall from Vaquez kicked off a string of three straight tech falls for the Lancers as both Paul Kelly and Drayden Morton would likewise earn five team points with 17-2 victories. The tech fall victories would put the Lancers up 15-0 with no takedowns allowed.
Presbyterian would get on the board for the first and only time at 165lbs with Yanik Simon pulling off a decision victory over true freshman Luke James of the Lancers. James was making his first dual start as a true freshman, but would fall 6-3 to give the Blue Hose three team points. Mason Espinoza would get the Lancers back in the win column at 174lbs and earned the team more bonus points with a perfect 12-0 major decision over Joshua Roe. David Alonso made his dual debut for the Lancers at 184 lbs and would earn the team's fourth tech fall of the match. Alonso would score ten points in less than 30 seconds off two takedowns and back points to secure the technical fall and four more points for CBU.
Presbyterian forfeited the 197lb bout and would thus trail 30-3 heading into the final three matches. The heavyweight dual was one of the most entertaining of the duals as Tristan Kemp battled Morvens Saint-Jean. Kemp struck first with a second-period reversal, but a takedown by Saint-Jean flipped the momentum to Presbyterian in the third period. Kemp would force a stall call to tie the bout, and some good defensive wrestling from Kemp would lead to a 5-4 victory and the decision win for CBU.
Cooper Shore would add to the dominant showing with his first dual victory as a Lancer at 125lbs, winning 5-1 over Brayden Adams. Remy Murillo would end the dual in dramatic fashion at 133lbs as he would pin Fernando Dominguez in the first period to give the CBU the emphatic 42-3 victory on the road.
