SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA--- The California Baptist University wrestling team competed in a double dual on Friday afternoon as they battled Drexel and Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. CBU would have four undefeated wrestlers on the day, but would ultimately fall in close battles in both duals.
DUAL 1 vs Drexel:
The Lancers opened the double dual against the Drexel Dragons from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in their first-ever dual against the opponent from the EIWA conference. The Lancers started hot with 12 quick points on the board courtesy of Jesse Vasquez, Paul Kelly, and Drayden Morton. Vasquez and Kelly delivered bonus points, with Vasquez earning a major decision at 141 pounds and Kelly securing a technical fall at 149 pounds.
Drexel would get its first points of the dual at 165lbs as Cody Walsh secured a sudden victory for the Dragons over Timothy Cowan, who was making his first dual start of the season. The victory would begin a string of four straight wins for Drexel, including two from ranked wrestlers via #14 Jasiah Queen and #31 Ibrahim Ameer. Tristan Kemp would break up the scoring for Drexel with a hard-fought battle at heavyweight. Kemp would force multiple stalls and cautions over his Drexel opposition to pull out the 9-5 decision.
Drexel pulled out a key victory at 125lbs with Desmon Pleasant adding a major decision for Drexel to make it 21-15 with just one match remaining. Remy Murillo would match up with #30 Kyle Waterman. Waterman, who was the EIWA runner-up last season, claimed victory in the first dual against Cal Poly but would have his hands full with Murillo. Murillo would strike first in the opening period and would score another takedown in the third period to earn his first ranked win of the season, 8-5 over Waterman. The Lancers would fall just short in the dual 21-18 at the end of ten matches.
DUAL 2 at Cal Poly:
In the second dual of the day, the Lancers would engage in a Southern California showdown against the Mustangs of Cal Poly. The Lancers once again would get off to a hot start thanks to the trio of Vasquez, Kelly, and Morton, who would give CBU the 9-0 lead. Vasquez kicked off the run with a 2-0 decision over Aiden Simmons. Kelly would win his matchup in dramatic fashion with a phenomenal scramble that would result in a touchdown plus two back points in sudden victory, giving CBU three more points on the board. Morton concluded the trio of victories with a 5-1 decision over Anthony Berg.
Cal Poly would flip the script on the Lancers over the next several matches, looking to bridge the deficit. The Mustangs would get bonus points in two of the next three matches, including a technical fall from #20 Cesar Garza at 184lbs. At 197lbs, Eli Sheeren and Wesley Wilson engaged in one of the most entertaining matchups of the dual. Sheeren struck first with a takedown in the first period, but a late takedown from Wilson, plus a rideout, would give Cal Poly three more points. The Mustangs would keep their foot on the gas and pick up a technical fall and fall to conclude the match at heavyweight and 125lbs. Murillo would win via forfeit to finalize the score at 26-15 in favor of the home team.
Vasquez, Murillo, Morton, and Kelly would all go unbeaten on the day for the Lancers, while Kemp picked up the only other win in the double dual for CBU.
