Softball Takes Down New Mexico State for Saturday Win

PHOENIX - Day two of the ASU/GCU Invitational was a good day for California Baptist softball as they trounced former Western Athletic Conference nemesis New Mexico State 8-2 in Phoenix. CBU improves to 6-9 overall, while NMSU falls to 9-6.
Three Lancers recorded multi-hit games, led by second baseman Malachy Russell-Millen, who went 2-2 with a walk, a double, a triple, a run scored, and two RBI. Ashley Annett and Priscilla Estrada also tallied a pair of hits on the day.
After a quiet opening few innings, the Lancers got the scoring going with a three-run third inning, posting all three runs before recording an out. Valerie Alvarez, Russell-Millen, and Estrada were all at the plate to score those runs, bringing home Lexi Lopez and pinch runners Alyssa Onyeagwa and Savannah Gatewood to earn that early 3-0 lead.
After the Lancers added one more in the top of the fourth on a productive foul out from Stevie Robison, the Aggie bats woke up and responded with two of their own, making it 4-2 after four. That's where the NM State scoring ended, but the Lancers continued to add insurance runs, plating one run in the top of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to run away with the decision.
Morgan McConnell got the start and lasted 3.1 innings, giving up just one earned. Annika Hollingsworth finished out the final 3.2 innings, earning her third win of the season while allowing three hits, no runs, and striking out a pair on just 47 pitches.
The Lancers will wrap up the ASU/GCU Invitational with one more game on Sunday morning, facing off against the Vikings of Portland State at 8:00 a.m. Pacific time.
