TEMPE - California Baptist University softball is returning to Riverside with a winning streak after taking care of business on Sunday morning against Portland State, 8-2, in the finale of the ASU/GCU Invitational. The Vikings skid now reaches eight in a row, with a record of 3-12 following the result, while CBU improves to 7-9 overall.
The top of the order carried the load for the Lancers on Sunday, as Priscilla Estrada, Matti Severns, and Kate Penberthy combined to go 6-for-11 with six runs scored and four RBI. Penberthy was especially locked in as both hits went for extra bases, a double, and a triple. Ashley Annett also recorded a pair of hits in the middle of the lineup, adding one more RBI to her tally.
Annika Hollingsworth made her second start of the weekend and third appearance, earning another win to improve her season record to 4-4. The true freshman put on a solid show on Sunday, going 5.2 innings, giving up just five hits, allowing only one earned run, and sitting down half a dozen Vikings. Morgan McConnell took over in the circle in the sixth with runners on the corners. A fielding error allowed one unearned run to score, but the senior hurler closed out the game with a flyout, a lineout, and two strikeouts.
CBU did most of its damage in bunches, combining solid hitting with taking advantage of four Portland State errors, three wild pitches, and a passed ball. The Lancers took a commanding lead after putting up three runs in the third and four more in the fourth behind seven combined hits. PSU would distance themselves from a run-rule decision just in time with two runs of their own in the sixth before CBU scored what would have been the early decider in the bottom of the sixth.
CBU remains on the road for this next week, traveling to San Diego on Tuesday to take on San Diego State. The Aztecs started this week ranked No. 23 but have gone 2-1 on Friday and Saturday at the Mary Nutter Classic, with two more contests to go on Sunday. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:00 p.m.
