PALM DESERT, CA--- California Baptist men's golf was back in action this past week and the Lancers showed well at the Desert Intercollegiate after finishing in fourth as a team of 15 programs. Bryden Brown had the best individual showing for CBU, posting a 4-under final score for a 16th-place finish.
The Lancers jumped out to a solid start on day one of the three-day tournament as all five golfers posted an under-par score. Jared Abercrombie took home the lowest round of the tournament on day one after shooting 68 on the par 72 course. The freshman scored 2-under on the second day of the tournament to keep himself within the top 10, but a tough day during the final round saw Abercombie finish 3-over par for 22nd place.
Brown was undoubtedly the most consistent golfer in Blue and Old Gold, staying within three strokes of par throughout all three rounds. The lowest round of the day for the transfer came on the third day, where Brown shot a 69 to secure 16th place. Just behind was Eeli Kujanpää, who posted a pair of under-par rounds during the first and second days of the tournament. Kujanpaa ultimately tied with Abercrombie for 22nd after shooting 2-over during the final round. Andy Yang and Sean Citherlet both stayed within the top 55, finishing in 32nd and 52nd, respectively.
The toughest hole by far on the course was 11, which tripped up many teams. The par-4 hole challenged CBU during the tournament's final two days, but the first round was a breeze for Lancers after the team shot 9-under. The first-round team score was the fifth-lowest round in program history for the Lancers, while the 54-hole team total was the fourth-lowest in program history.
California Baptist will return to the course in early March as they take on the GCU Invitational hosted by Grand Canyon.
