TULSA, OK--- The California Baptist University wrestling team concluded its third trip to the BIG 12 Wrestling Championships with a placer and NCAA qualifier for the second consecutive season
The Lancers finished with six wrestlers making it to the blood rounds on day one, including an incredible run from Leake at 133 lbs. Leake became the first Lancer to be a semi-finalist in his respective weight class after he pulled a pair of upsets over #3 Julian Farber of UNI and #6 Cleveland Belton of Oklahoma. Leake came into the tournament unseeded after having an injury-riddled senior season but became a bracket buster with the two upsets before eventually coming up short to #2 Dominick Serrano of Northern Colorado. Leake would have to medically forfeit his final two matches of day two, earning him the 6th place finish for the second straight season.
The BIG 12 has six allocations for nationals at 133 lbs, so Leake wrapped up the qualifying bid on day one and will become the first two-time NCAA qualifier in program history. On the team side of things, CBU would finish with 15.0 total points, one off of their program high that they achieved last season.
Leake will focus on getting healthy as he prepares to head to Philadelphia for the NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Wells Fargo Center. The Championships will run from March 20-22.
