RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist men's water program finished out its weekend slate with a trio of games on Saturday, taking two of the three matches. CBU bested Austin College and Concordia University, Irvine, but fell to #7 UC San Diego by a single goal in a thrilling midday match. The Lancers move to 11-7 on the season.
The #15 Lancers showcased their strength in a decisive 18-3 victory over Austin College to kick off the day, taking control from the start and netting seven goals in the first period alone. Paulo Hernandez led the charge with five goals, while Tyler Carlson secured seven saves between the sticks during the dominant win. CBU totaled 14 goals in the first half alone before pulling back on offense, but still denying the Kangaroos at almost every opportunity.
The second match of the day was much more competitive as the Lancers welcomed #7 UC San Diego to Riverside for a duel. CBU secured an early lead coming out of the first period, but back-and-forth scoring would ultimately put the score tied 4-4 at the half. Tanner McCreary showed out in goal for the Lancers, showcasing several impressive saves that helped keep the Tritons at bay. The third period saw four goals from UCSD to the Lancers' two, but Keven Rosa's squad made honorable strides in the fourth quarter to tie the game once again after erasing their two-goal deficit. The match ultimately sided with the Tritons after a last-minute goal from UCSD allowed the visiting squad to hold on to the thrilling win.
The final game of the day was a showdown between CUI and CBU, which saw a sluggish start from the latter. The Golden Eagles came out hot and found the back of the net thrice before the Lancers answered. It was in the second frame that Rosa's squad shut down the CUI offense and limited them to just a single goal for a three-goal lead at the half. From there, CBU began to pull away in the final two periods for the 15-12 win, highlighted by four goals from Andrea Nuzzo.
Nuzzo finished the weekend with nine goals, while Wyatt Bugbee and Paulo Hernandez tallied eight each. McCreary ended the weekend with 21 saves between the posts.
CBU will now turn its attention to the first weekend of October, where it'll compete in the Pomona Pitzer Tournament.
