RIVERSIDE --- For the first time as conference foes, California Baptist and UC Riverside squared off in the annual Crosstown Showdown clash. On a rare rain-soaked night in Southern California, the Lancers gained the edge in the second half, as they bested their crosstown foes, 2-0.
Â
CBU moves to 9-3-0 overall, while their mark in Pac-12 play moves to 3-1-0. The Lancers still remain a point shy of Oregon State.
Â
The Lancers had three looks on frame in the first half and added a fourth early in the second before the levy finally broke. CBU finally put one past UCR goalkeeper Giancarlo Sagredo in the 54th minute when a set piece put the Lancers on the board.
Â
Â
Freshman Mustapha Khasim was the one to tack on the go-ahead goal, a right-footed volley off a corner kick swung into the penalty area by Stavros Charalampous. The goal was the first of Khasim's collegiate career, while Charalampous picked up his third save in the Lancers' last four matches.
Â
With the rain picking up even more as the clock ticked closer to the 90th minute, the fight for Saturday's second goal grew ever more intense. Both sides registered opportunities that nearly found the goal, but a score would not be found until the 81st minute.
Â
Set up by Felix Ezekwuka's low ball into the penalty area, Justin Ojo beat Sagredo to give the Lancers a two-goal cushion, seemingly placing a bow on another CBU win.
Â
Â
Ojo dazzled the fans at the CBU Soccer Stadium throughout Saturday's win with his swift footwork that bested UCR defenders on multiple occasions. His goal, his sixth of the season, is his fifth in the Lancers' last four outings.
Stonewalling the Highlanders for all 90 minutes was freshman Ulrik Stroem, who wrapped up his sixth shutout of the year. Stroem recorded a career-high seven saves. His counterpart, Sagredo, tallied nine.
Â
The Lancers closed the night with 20 shots to 13 from the Highlanders. CBU also finished with a season-high 14 corner kicks.
Â
CBU will return to action on Wednesday, as CBU visits Cal State Fullerton for the first Big West crossover match of the 2026 season. CBU then returns to Riverside to host San Diego State for Senior Day on Saturday, October 17.
Â
Both of next week's contests are scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be streamed on ESPN+.

"We were running on fumes tonight, and we probably should have put the game away earlier, but we got it done, and at the end of the day, any derby win is a good win," noted head coach Coe Michaelson. "Our schedule is relentless, but we have a lot to play for, so we need to rest up and prepare for Fullerton."
