Michaelson Becomes CBU’s Winningest Coach in Win Over Fullerton

FULLERTON, CA --- California Baptist took a break from conference action on Wednesday to play the first of three Big West/Pac-12 crossover matches. Visiting the Titans of Cal State Fullerton, a 3-1 victory for the Lancers secured a career milestone for CBU's head coach, Coe Michaelson.
Michaelson, now 11 years into his tenure leading the Lancers, earned his 108th victory as the program's head coach. Michaelson is now the winningest coach in CBU Men's Soccer history, surpassing Howard Boyer, who won 107 matches between 1985 and 1999.
Wednesday's victory improved the Lancers' record in 2026 to 10-3-0.
"I thought we played an excellent first half but were pretty sloppy second half," noted Michaelson. "In the end, we got the result we wanted while also rotating the team a bit. Hopefully that helps us feel a bit fresher on Saturday for a big home match on senior day."
It took less than eight minutes to see the Lancers tack on their first goal of the night. Set up by a cross from Blake D'Agostino, Uly Martinez fired a shot that deflected off the Fullerton defender, ricocheting high into the air towards the far post, where it snuck inside for the score.
The goal was the first of Martinez's collegiate career.
CBU was back on the attack in the 36th minute, as Nico Coppe collected a pass near midfield and drove towards the penalty area. With two defenders on him, Coope evaded their attempts before netting his second goal of the season.
In a push to pull back into the match, Fullerton caught the break they needed in the 83rd minute when the referee signaled for a penalty. The Lancers challenged the call, and after review, the call of a penalty was confirmed.
Adan Alvarado stepped up for the Titans and converted, pulling Fullerton within one.
However, three minutes later, the Lancers were the beneficiary of the same call, as a penalty was awarded after Ryan Abou-Eid was taken down in the box. Fullerton, like the Lancers, challenged the call, but the ruling was confirmed.
D'Agostino slotted home the penalty attempt, giving him seven goals on the season to retake the team lead.
Freshman goalkeeper Ulrik Stroem tallied five saves to match his season high. On the opposite side, Fullerton's two goalkeepers combined for six saves.
CBU returns to action on Saturday when they welcome San Diego State to the CBU Soccer Stadium. A win on Saturday will clinch a home match for the Lancers in the Pac-12 Semifinals, scheduled for November 7.
Saturday will also be Senior Night, with six seniors set to be honored before the match.
