RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University men's water polo team will host another critical Big West Conference match this weekend as the #12 Long Beach State Beach come to town this Saturday.
The Lancers are coming off a 2-2 week in which they defeated conference foe Cal State Fullerton on the road and then went 1-2 at the Julian Fraser Memorial Invitational. CBU is 22-8 overall this season and is in a four-way tie for first place in the Big West Standings at 2-1.
The Beach comes into the matchup after a 0-2 week in which they dropped an overtime match to #2 Stanford at home and lost 8-13 to UCSB on the road. The Beach is 1-2 in conference play, with its lone win coming at home over Cal State Fullerton two weeks ago. The Lancers have never beaten the Beach in their last 13 tries, and this will be the first matchup against LBSU at home since 2005. In the most recent matchup, Long Beach bested the Lancers 17-16 at UCLA at the MPSF Invitational. LBSU will feature two of the top five goal scorers in the conference, with Federico Gulisano and Corbin Stanley combining for 110 goals this season.
The matchup will be the penultimate Big West regular-season contest for the Lancers as they look to position themselves to earn a first-round bye in the Big West Tournament or potentially win the regular-season title. CBU will continue to rely on its dynamic duo of Rafa Martinez and Andrea Nuzo, who rank second and third in the conference in goals scored, respectively. Nuzzo leads the conference with 73 assists and is third in goals with 63, while Martinez is second in goals with 65 and is second in field blocks with 13.
