TEMPE, AZ--- The California Baptist University wrestling team made the short trip out to Tempe, Arizona, on Friday evening as they took on the Arizona State Sun Devils in a conference dual. The Lancers would start strong with wins from Jesse Vasquez and Paul Kelly, but the Sun Devils would ultimately defend their home mat with a 31-9 victory.
The duel would begin at 141lbs as Jesse Vasquez would return to an arena he competed in for the last four seasons as a Sun Devil. Vasquez, a former PAC-12 Champion and NCAA qualifier for ASU, would get the Lancers on the board in dramatic fashion as he would pin #20 Pierson Manville in the second period. Vasquez overpowered Manville early in the second period and would nearly have some back points before firmly placing Manville on his back for the fall. The victory was Vasquez's first ranked win of the season and, after a misconduct deduction, put the Lancers up 5-0.
Paul Kelly would add to the Lancer lead at 149lbs as he would dominate Daniel Miranda of ASU 12-0 for the major decision. Kelly would get an early takedown and compound that with nearfall points for a commanding advantage. Kelly would collect another takedown before securing the major decision for CBU. ASU would get on the board at 157lbs as #5 Kaleb Larkin would battle Drayden Morton. Morton held up several solid attempts from Larkin, but a second-period takedown would secure the bout for ASU for their first three points of the evening.
The Sun Devils would secure technical falls in the next three matches as #13 Nicco Ruiz, Cael Valencia, and Shay Addison would all give ASU five points, taking a commanding 18-9 lead over CBU. Colton Hawks and #18 David Szuba would eke out a decision over Eli Sheeren and Tristan Kemp, respectively, before ASU would collect more bonus points at 125lbs from Ane'e Vigil. The only ranked-on-ranked matchup occurred at 133 lbs as #31 Remy Murillo would take on #5 Kyler Larkin. Larkin would secure two takedowns in the match and round out the dual victory with a 7-2 decision over Murillo.
NEXT: The Lancers will finish out the road trip on Sunday, February 15, against Air Force in Colorado Springs.
