OREM, UT --- California Baptist will travel to Orem for the final time as a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) on Thursday, as the Lancers and Utah Valley meet for the third time this season. First place is on the line as the Lancers look to extend their half-game lead over the Wolverines and claim the season series.
CBU and UVU have met twice this season, with both sides owning a win on their respective home floors. Thursday is a meeting of two of the top home teams in the nation, as both CBU and UVU are 12-0 on their home floors this year.
The first meeting between the Lancers and Wolverines came on opening night of the conference season, December 29, a 73-66 win for Utah Valley. The second installment was a 78-71 overtime victory for the Lancers on January 24 in Riverside.
Dominique Daniels Jr. made history in the January victory, scoring a CBU record 47 points. Daniels Jr. enters the week averaging 22.4 PPG, the sixth-best scoring average in Division I. He is also the reigning WAC Player of the Week.
Both CBU and UVU enter Thursday's meeting after similar results, as both teams are coming off a loss against Utah Tech in St. George. Utah Tech has won five in a row and is now tied with the Lancers for first in the WAC at 9-4.
CBU's loss in St. George ended a nine-game win streak, the longest in CBU's Division I era. The Lancers are .500 (6-6) on the road this season and had won three in a row away from Riverside before Saturday's loss.
Saturday's loss saw Daniels Jr. lead with 29 points. Jayden Jackson knocked down a season-high six 3-pointers to finish with a season-best 20 points. Jonathan Griman pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds, 11 of which came on the offensive end, establishing a CBU Division I record for most offensive boards in a game.
Utah Valley is led by Jackson Holcombe, who is averaging 15.8 PPG and 7.3 RPG. Holcombe scored 25 points in UVU's December win against CBU and then dropped 22 in the overtime battle in Riverside.
Thursday will be CBU's lone game this week. After the trip to Orem, the Lancers will return to Riverside to play their final three home games of the season, starting with a visit from UT Arlington on February 26. The homestand continues with Homecoming against Tarleton State on February 28, and then Senior Night on March 5, when Abilene Christian returns to Riverside.
CBU will end the season on March 7 at Southern Utah. Tickets for all remaining home dates are on sale HERE.
