Record Crowd Fills CBU Soccer Stadium for Welcome Weekend Battle

RIVERSIDE --- A record crowd of 1,762 fans flooded the CBU Soccer Stadium with the sound of vuvuzelas, as the Lancers battled No. 7 San Diego in 2026's Welcome Weekend match. Forced to play a man down for the final 25 minutes, the Lancers would not be held off the board, but the visiting Toreros prevailed with a 2-1 win.
The crowd, mostly CBU students who packed the corner bleachers, broke the CBU Soccer Stadium attendance record that was set over Welcome Weekend in 2024.
"San Diego is a top team, and in the fiirst half, they showed that," said head coach Coe Michaelson. "But the second half felt like it was ours, and we were building momentum, so it's disappointing to see a player sent off. However, our response to that was nothing short of exceptional. There are things we have to learn from tonight, but I'm proud of the character the boys showed in extremely difficult circumstances."
Blake D'Agostino netted the Lancers' lone goal of the day, his third of the season, when a handball was called in the penalty area, and after video review, the call of a penalty was upheld. D'Agostino stepped up for the Lancers, and with his left foot, he rifled the attempt into the left side of the net.
The successful penalty was the second of the season for D'Agostino. He is 7-for-7 for his career.
However, the goal came with the Lancers already in a hole, trailing 2-0 in the 68th minute, and playing a man down. San Diego netted their first goal of the day in the 14th minute when Noah James put the Toreros on the board behind a Tony Ramirez assist. San Diego added to their tally in the 65th minute with Luca Fava scoring off passes from Iain Wagner and Steven Ramirez.
San Diego's second goal came less than a minute after freshman Mustapha Khasim was sent off. Khasim was shown a red card after a foul on a San Diego breakaway attempt. The center referee went to the replay device to confirm the call, and after review, the call was upheld.
Khasim will be forced to sit out CBU's next match due to the ejection.
Goalkeeper Hugo Do Rego made his second start of the season. Do Rego finished with one save against two goals allowed. Through four matches, the Lancers have split goalkeeping minutes between Do Rego and freshman Ulrik Stroem.
The Lancers will have to wait two weeks before stepping back onto their home pitch, as CBU's next home date comes on September 20 when the University of the Pacific visits Riverside. CBU will next see the field on Friday, September 11, when the Lancers travel to Los Angeles to play LMU. CBU will then visit Phoenix and Grand Canyon on September 16.
Friday's match with the Lions is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
