MSOC Preview: No. 7 San Diego to Visit CBU Over Welcome Weekend

RIVERSIDE --- For the eighth time in the last seven years, California Baptist is set to take on its non-conference rivals from the south, San Diego, as the No. 7-ranked Toreros visit Riverside for CBU's annual Welcome Weekend match. In front of an expected capacity crowd, the Lancers will look for revenge from last season's heartbreaking 3-2 loss at Torero Stadium.
Saturday marks the ninth meeting all-time between the Lancers and Toreros, dating back to CBU's first Division I season in 2018. The rivalry has seen several memorable matches, including CBU's penalty-kick victory in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. San Diego owns a two-match win streak against the Lancers, including last season's 3-2 finish in San Diego that saw the Toreros score three goals in the final five minutes of regulation.
The all-time series with the Lancers and Toreros is split, with both sides owning four wins against one another.
CBU comes into Saturday's match 2-1-0 on the season following the Lancers' 2-0 win against Denver on Monday night. Monday's win marked 100 CBU victories for head coach Coe Michaelson, who is in year 11 leading the Lancers.
San Diego enters the weekend as the No. 7-ranked program in the latest United Soccer Coaches' Poll. Top Draw Soccer has the Toreros ranked fourth. The Toreros have faced one of the toughest schedules in Division I soccer through four matches, having taken on the nation's top-ranked team twice. USD began its campaign with a 2-1 win over defending national champion Washington and later fell 1-0 against top-ranked Stanford.
The Toreros were the No. 2 team in the nation entering their August 27 visit to Palo Alto. USD added a draw against UC Santa Barbara on Monday night, an outcome that did not account towards Tuesday's updated poll.
In the Lancers' 2-0 victory over Denver, CBU saw goals come in both halves as sophomore Liam Jones ('36) and junior Blake D'Agostino ('90) netted their second goals of the season. Both of CBU's victories this season have been by 2-0 finals, with Jones and D'Agostino scoring for the Lancers.
Jones and D'Agostino were the Lancers' leading goal scorers from a season ago. D'Agostino finished with ten in 2025, while Jones added five.
Goalkeeper Ulrik Stroem earned his second start of the season and recorded his first collegiate victory and shutout. Senior Hugo Do Rego has also played in goal this season for CBU, earning his tenth collegiate shutout in the Lancers' opening day win against Campbell.
The Toreros are averaging 1.5 goals per match while allowing one goal in each of their four matches to start the season. Steven Ramirez leads the squad with three goals and is one of six Toreros to dish out an assist. Lucca Adams has played all 360 minutes in goal for USD and features a .692 save percentage.
Saturday night's match caps off one of the most anticipated weeks of the year at CBU, Welcome Weekend. Marked as the kickoff to a new academic year at CBU, over 1,000 incoming students are projected to file into CBU Soccer Stadium in what has become the highest attended match of the season annually. In 2024, the Welcome Weekend crowd of 1,617 set a new attendance record for the CBU Soccer Stadium.
