MSOC Preview: Sunday Matinee Pits the Lancers Against Pacific

RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist will be back at the CBU Soccer Stadium on Sunday as the Lancers kick off a single-match home stand against the University of the Pacific. Coming off back-to-back shutouts, the Lancers will get their fourth look at an opponent from the WCC.

The Lancers went 2-0 on their two-match road trip, pulling out consecutive 1-0 victories against LMU and Grand Canyon. Blake D'Agostino added a point in both matches, scoring the winning goal against LMU and later assisting Nico Coope's winning strike against Grand Canyon.

Goalkeeper Ulrik Stroem recorded his third consecutive shutout in Wednesday's victory. Stroem, a freshman, tallied three saves. Goalkeeping has been a game-by-game decision for head coach Coe Michaelson and his staff. Senior Hugo Do Rego has started matches this season, including an opening day shutout of Campbell. Stroem, however, has made four starts, including the Lancers' last two outings.

Stroem was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday, the first Pac-12 weekly award for the Lancers.

Offensively, D'Agostino continues to lead the Lancers in goals (4) and points (9). Sophomore Liam Jones, who has missed the last two matches with injury, is second on the team in goals scored with two. Coope and freshman Justin Ojo add the Lancers' other tallies. Five Lancers are tied with one assist.

Sunday's look at the Tigers is the Lancers' fourth match against a WCC program. The Lancers are 2-1-0 in their previous three looks, including the win against LMU and a 2-0 shutout of Denver.

Pacific, a program the Lancers have never played, sits 1-5-2 through their first eight matches. The Tigers' lone victory was a 3-2 victory against CBU's old conference foe, Utah Tech. Pacific's two draws were against UC Davis and San Jose State.

The Tigers were in action on Thursday as they kicked off their road trip with a loss against Sacramento State.

CBU's short one-match homestand will be followed by the Lancers' longest road trip of the season, a three-match stretch away from Riverside. CBU kicks off the road trip with a visit to UC Irvine in the final match before the Pac-12 season begins. The Lancers then kick off the conference season on September 30 when they visit Gonzaga, and then the trip concludes with a visit to Cal Poly on October 4.
