Doc Wellman is entering his third season as Director of Basketball Operations for Men's Basketball after serving head coach Rick Croy as an assistant coach since the 2013-14 season. In his new role, Wellman handles all day-to-day operations, including scheduling, summer camps, maintaining the program budget, and organizing all aspects of team travel.

In the 2024-2025 season, Coach Wellman and the Lancers finished 17-15 and made the WAC tournament for the fifth consecutive season where they defeated #6 Tarleton State to reach the semifinals for the first time in program history. The Lancers defeated Grand Canyon at home and finished the season with double digit home wins for the sixth time in the DI era.

In the 2023-24 season, Coach Wellman and the Lancers finished 16-17 and made the WAC Tournament for the third consecutive season where they defeated #5 Utah Valley in the opening round before falling to Seattle U in the Quarterfinals.

In 2023, the Lancers to a 17-16 finish on the 2022-23 season, recording the fifth-straight winning season since making the jump into the NCAA Division I ranks. The Lancers also won their second WAC tournament game with a win over Abilene Christian 69-62 in the first round.

In 2022, CBU posted an 18-16 record and won their first-ever WAC tournament game with an 81-80 win over UTRGV and was invited to the College Basketball Invitational in Dayton Beach, Florida.

Prior to joining Croy in 2013-14, Wellman spent three previous seasons as an assistant coach for Chris Victor at Citrus College in Glendora. In that time, the Owls went a combined 71-19 and made an appearance in the State Championship game in 2011-12 and a State Final Four appearance in 2012-13.

Prior to his three years working for Victor, Wellman spent five seasons at Citrus College with Croy. He began his coaching career in 2005 and played a pivotal role in helping the Owls reach the postseason in 2006 for just the second time in school history, along with winning their first-ever State Championship in 2008.

In his eight combined seasons at Citrus, the program amassed a State-best 201-54 record, including four conference championships, and matriculated 56 players to the four-year level.

A Southern California native, Wellman graduated from Azusa Pacific with a BA in Applied Studies. He lives in Riverside with his wife Sammi and their daughter Ryleigh.
