IRVINE, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 9-ranked California Baptist couldn't overcome a sluggish start and as a result Concordia went on to post a 2-0 upset of the Lancers Saturday afternoon.
The loss is the Lancers' second straight this week, both coming after they climbed into the NAIA's Top 10. They fall to 8-3 overall, 2-2 (6 points) GSAC and could fall out of the ranking altogether when the new poll comes out Wednesday. The Eagles, who upset top 10 Westmont last week, out-shot the Lancers, 12-9, however, 10 of those shots came in the first half all the while holding the Lancers to just a single shot in the first 45 minutes.
In the 19th minute, Brianne Wahrenbrock scored an unassisted goal off a free kick to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Exactly 20 minutes later, Zahira Montanez scored an unassisted goal from 16 yards out to the far post to double the lead.
That was all the scoring, although the Lancers increased the pressure in the second half and out-shot the Eagles, 8-2. However, none of the 8 shots found the net and the Eagles posted the upset. Emily Evanson made her second collegiate start and collected 6 saves.
