RIVERSIDE – The Lancers erupted for four goals in a dominant performance Wednesday night, snapping a five-game scoring drought with a 4-0 shutout of UC Irvine at CBU Soccer Stadium.
CBU ended its scoring drought in spectacular fashion, putting four past the Anteaters to earn its second Big West conference win and seventh victory of the season. The Lancers improve to 7-3-4 overall and 2-3-3 in conference play, while UC Irvine falls to 4-8-3 and 2-5-1.
Freshman defender Jaelynn Hillenbrand and sophomore forward Kandace Koerth scored their first career goals for CBU, while senior forward Tyra King and freshman forward Maya Yoshimura added their third goals of the season. King also recorded an assist to finish with three points on the night, while senior midfielder Anja Jestrovic and junior midfielder Katrina Marsh each contributed an assist.
The win marks the Lancers' 29th victory at CBU Soccer Stadium and their highest-scoring win since defeating Southern Utah 5-1 on Sept. 28, 2024. CBU also recorded its second shutout in the last three games and 11th of the season, limiting UC Irvine to just eight shots and two shots on goal.
With heavy rain falling throughout the night, both teams initially struggled to maintain possession in the wet conditions. Sophomore defender Mikaela Burchell received a yellow card in the 11th minute as UC Irvine looked to create early opportunities.
The Anteaters earned three consecutive corner kicks early in the first half, but the Lancer defense held firm before CBU began to turn the tide offensively. The Lancers finished the half with eight shots compared to UC Irvine's two, and their pressure eventually paid off when King sent a cross into the box for Hillenbrand.
The freshman got a shot off that deflected off the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner to give CBU a 1-0 lead. King recorded her third assist of the season on Hillenbrand's first career goal.
CBU carried its advantage into halftime after outshooting the Anteaters 8-2. UC Irvine held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, but the Lancers continued to generate attacking opportunities.
The Lancers wasted little time extending their lead in the second half, scoring off a free kick in the Anteaters' half. Jestrovic delivered the assist as King found the back of the net to make it 2-0. The goal marked King's third of the season and Jestrovic's fifth assist.
CBU continued to press, and its efforts paid off again when Marsh delivered a ball down the line to Yoshimura. The freshman dribbled into the box and finished the opportunity to extend the lead to 3-0, recording her third goal of the season. Marsh earned the first assist of her career, while UC Irvine received a yellow card shortly after the goal.
Koerth delivered the final highlight of the night, receiving the ball near the top of the box, maneuvering around a defender and firing a right-footed shot past the goalkeeper. The goal marked Koerth's first career tally, with senior forward Alyse Then earning the assist.
CBU finished the night with 17 shots, eight on goal and six corner kicks. Goalkeepers Mikayla O'Brien and Rebecca Winton combined for the shutout, making two saves as the Lancer defense limited UC Irvine to just two shots on target.
The Lancers will look to carry the momentum into Saturday's matchup against CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m. at CBU Soccer Stadium. CBU will celebrate Senior Night, honoring the team's seven seniors in its final home regular-season game of the year.
