RIVERSIDE, Calif. – CBU women's soccer claimed a 2-1 Senior Night victory over CSU Bakersfield on Saturday night at CBU Soccer Stadium, earning its second consecutive win behind first-half goals from senior midfielder Jessica Ramirez and junior forward Nikki Mau.
The Lancers (8-3-4, 3-3-3) earned their eighth win of the season and their 30th victory at CBU Soccer Stadium. The Roadrunners fell to 2-14-2 (1-7-1) with their second consecutive loss.
With the win, CBU moved into a tie for fifth place in the Big West standings with 12 points, joining Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and CSUN. The Lancers remain in contention for a postseason berth with two conference matches remaining.
""We had three objectives tonight, earn three points to continue to move up the Big West standings and fight for a spot in the post season tournament, honor a special senior class and earn the shutout. We got 2 out of 3 objectives done," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "This was a game we controlled and should have put away our opponent earlier. We got too casual in possession leading to unnecessary turnovers and fouls in bad areas of the field. We know we're a better team than what we showed in the second half, we'll learn from this. Bottom line, we got 6 points this week which sets us up well going into the final two road."
CBU controlled much of the first half, pressing Bakersfield into its own defensive half and creating several opportunities in front of goal. The pressure paid off in the 22nd minute when junior midfielder Katrina Marsh played a forward ball to senior midfielder Anja Jestrovic, who sent a cross into the box for Ramirez to head home and give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Ramirez's third of her CBU career, while Jestrovic recorded her sixth assist of the season and Marsh collected her second assist in as many games. Ramirez also scored against the Roadrunners in CBU's 1-0 victory last season.
The Lancers continued to apply pressure, earning five corner kicks and recording 11 shots in the opening half while limiting Bakersfield to just one attempt. After CBU junior midfielder Ashley Mekitarian received the first yellow card of the match in the 36th minute, the Lancers struck again just before halftime.
With 14 seconds remaining in the first half, freshman forward Camryn Gouveia played a through ball to Mau, who finished the opportunity to double the CBU lead at 2-0. Gouveia earned the assist on Mau's goal, giving the Lancers a two-goal advantage heading into the break.
Bakersfield responded in the second half, earning a penalty kick after a foul in the box was reviewed by video review. The Roadrunners converted the attempt in the 54th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1.
CBU continued to generate opportunities in search of an insurance goal, finishing with 19 shots, including six on target, and seven corner kicks. Graduate goalkeeper Mikayla O'Brien made three saves, including two in the second half, to help preserve the lead. Graduate defender Taylor Held and freshman defender Jaelynn Hillenbrand also contributed defensively as the Lancers held off the Roadrunners through the final minutes.
The physical contest featured four yellow cards, with CBU receiving two and Bakersfield receiving two in the second half. The Lancers maintained their advantage through the final whistle to secure the Senior Night victory.
CBU will close out the regular season on the road, traveling to Sacramento State on Wednesday, Oct. 28, before facing Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Oct. 31. Both matches will carry important postseason implications as the Lancers look to secure a spot in the Big West Championship.
