AZUSA, Calif. --- For 48 minutes, California Baptist gave the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific all it could handle, but the Cougars scored two second half goals, downing the Lancers 2-0 Saturday afternoon in GSAC game.
The loss is the Lancers' first in conference-play and it snaps their four-game win streak. CBU is now 8-3 overall, 3-1 (9 points) GSAC. The Cougars improve to 8-1-1, 4-0-0 (12 points).
The Lancers came out swinging. They earned a free kick on top of the box just 2:50 into the game. Lizzy Bendrick hammered a shot on frame, but All-American Jill Colfer-Martinson made a nice save. The rebound went right to Lindsey Merrett, but Colfer-Martinson saved Merrett's shot as well.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars got a corner kick in the 49th minute and made it count. Randie Massro rose above a crowd and headed the service inside the near post to break the scoreless tie.
Then in the 77th minute, the Cougars won a ball at midfield. Lynsey Domene then played a through ball to the top of the penalty box. Theresa Broad ran onto the ball and beat CBU keeper Emily Evanson to complete the scoring.
The Cougars out-shot the Lancers, 14-8, including a 7-4 margin in each half. Evanson made five saves.
CBU gets its second straight shot at a top five team when the Lancers travel to San Diego, Calif., Wednesday to take on No. 5 Point Loma Nazarene.
