COSTA MESA, Calif. ? Yudelka Bonilla ended the Concordia Labor Day Tournament with another career record notched on her belt as California Baptist University won both matches Saturday defeating College of the Ozarks (Mo.) 3-0 (30-19, 30-28, 30-19) and Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) 3-0 (30-19, 30-22, 30-19). Bonilla, who already holds career records in kills and attempts, set another school career record in aces as she hit her 171st and 172nd ace to break Linsey Smolskis' record of 170. The Lancers (6-1) finished the tournament undefeated with the two wins over the Bobcats (1-4) and Tigers (0-4).
“We're a very strong serving team,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “I expect us to be at the top in the conference as far as aces. Yudelka has such a strong serve. Angela (Willis) and Mical (Bell) also have been serving well.”
Bonilla had two of the Lancers' 11 aces against ONU and she had six of the 21 total aces on the day.
Olivet took 2-0 lead in the first two games, but CBU overpowered the Tigers with 41 kills and won all three games in convincing fashion. Verania Willis had 14 kills while Angela Willis had 10 with a .692 hitting percentage. Katrina Clark had 16 digs while Kayla Van Duyn assisted on 37 kills.
In the opening match, Shi Fei recorded a match high 12 kills hitting .346 while Verania Willis hit .360 with 11 kills. Bonilla served four aces to tie the school record for aces in a career with 170. CBU hit .327 against Ozarks with 45 kills.
CBU struggled in the first two games against Ozarks falling behind early in the first and trailing for a majority of the time in the second. The Lancers fell behind 7-5 in the first game before going on a 5-1 run to take a 10-8 lead and didn't lose the lead outscoring the Bobcats 20-11 down the stretch. Ozarks used an 8-0 run early in the second exploding out to a 12-4 lead and led by six (20-14) midway through. CBU then began to slowly chip away before earning its first tie at 27-27 since the game was 4-4. CBU took a 28-27 lead on a setting error, but the Bobcats tied it at 28 on a Brittney Day kill. Fei set the Lancers up with a match point after a kill and Mical Bell closed out the game with an ace.
CBU dominated the final game as Ozarks never got closer than two (6-4) as the Lancers won their third straight match.
“Overall, there is still a lot of stuff to work on,” said McGuyre. “I didn't feel that we were very consistent in this tournament. I didn't know if we were playing catch up from our trip to Florida. We don't have much time to figure it out with two conference games next week.”
The Lancers travel to The Master's, Tuesday, for a 7 p.m. game before hosting Fresno Pacific for their home opener, Saturday, at 7 p.m. inside of Van Dyne Gymnasium.
