RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- For California Baptist, it may not get much better than this?at least for today.
The Lancers put together one of their finest performances of the year and picked up their biggest win of the season to date with a 2-1 upset of the NAIA's No. 11-ranked Concordia on a soggy Saturday.
The win is the Lancers' second straight as they improve to 6-2 overall, 1-0 GSAC (3 points). The Eagles, who have never been ranked higher, fall to 6-2, 0-1.
Lizzy Bendrick broke 1-1 tie in the 55th minute with a beautiful goal from a corner kick, and the Lancer defense made it stand.
“It's a great result,” said first year head coach Kristen St. Clair. “The girls have stepped up, especially on the defensive end. I am very pleased with our performance today. They battled through the conditions and put together a nice effort and decided to roll up their sleeves and go to work.”
It took just 21 minutes for that work to payoff when Jacquelyn Witz put away her sixth goal of the season off an assist from Kyrie Nicassio to give CBU an early 1-0 advantage.
Just seven minutes into the second half, though, the Eagles found the equalizer. Brianne Wahrenbrock scored her eighth of the season putting home a nice cross to knot the game at one.
The Lancers had just two corner kicks the entire day, but made good on their second and final corner when Bendrick curled a service inside the far post and into the net for her second goal of the season for the winner.
“We got out of sorts there for a little bit, but to the girls' credit they pulled it together and had two great finishes,” said St. Clair. “It is definitely a great confidence builder and a great way to start conference play.”
