ATHERTON, Calif. --- California Baptist scored a pair of first half goals and then used a stellar defensive effort Thursday to rebound from its first loss of the year with a 2-0 win at NAIA-member Menlo.
The win moves the Lancers to 3-1 on the season, while the Oaks, who won the CalPac championship and played in the NAIA Region II Playoffs last year, fall to 2-1.
"We really put some things together today," said first-year head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We tried some girls in different positions, and they couldn't have responded any better. Things are slowly coming together, and we are beginning to do some nice things. (Brittany) Shea had some nice runs up the side. Monica (Lydon) and Vanessa (Wellman) held things together in the midfield, and Lizzy (Bendrick) created some very dangerous opportunities. She is really beginning to come into her own."
Junior Lindsey Merrett got things started in the 18th minute with an assisted goal as she cleaned up a scramble in front of the Oaks' net and tucked away her fourth goal of the season. She is now just one goal away from matching her career-high total of five goals, which she scored her freshman season.
The Lancers out-shot Menlo, 18-5, on the day, including an 11-3 total in the first half. On their final shot of the opening 45 minutes, Jacquelyn Witz headed home her third goal of the season with just two seconds remaining in the half off a cross from Lizzy Bendrick.
Sophomore keeper Emily Evanson needed to make just one save for the Lancers' first shutout of the season and the second of her young career.
CBU concludes its two-game swing through Northern California Saturday when it takes on NAIA-member Southern Oregon at 1 p.m. at Menlo.
