RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Mike Smith, Head Softball Coach at California Baptist, announced the hiring of Char Wilson as a new addition to the coaching staff for the 2008 season. Wilson comes to CBU with over two decades of softball experience as a coach and player.
“We are glad to add a coach with this much experience and knowledge of the game,” said Smith. “I think Char comes in with a ton of enthusiasm and can relate to our players very well. She has a ton of connections though various different softball organizations and just has a love to be out on the field. She will be a tremendous help for us as we try to bring home a fifth straight Golden State Athletic Conference title.”
Prior to becoming a part of the Lancers' staff, she was at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif., for seven years, where she helped led the Lady Rustlers to back-to-back play-off appearances after a long drought. While at GWC she was in charge of the infield and the many aspects of hitting.
Wilson began her coaching career at the age of 17 coaching ASA before becoming the assistant coach of the junior varsity team in at El Modena High in 1998. She earned her first varsity head coaching job in 2000 at La Quinta High. While at La Quinta, Wilson not only was successful on the field, but also in the classroom. Her team earned an overall team GPA of 3.4.
Wilson has also been involved with Amateur Softball Association (ASA) for six years where she is the Women's Fastpitch Commissioner for Southern California. She helped build the Women's Fastpitch Program to give opportunities to women 18 years of age and up to continue their love for the game of fastpitch softball. She also has made this program useful to college age women who want to rehab injuries or women that just want to stay in shape during the summer months prior to returning to their college teams.
Wilson played collegiate softball at Santa Ana College in 1997 and Golden West College in 1999. During her time at the two colleges, she also participated in track and field.
In December 2007, Char Wilson was named one of the coaches of the Southern California Softball Team to play against the USA National Team in July, 2008. This event will be the last stop for the National team prior to leaving to Beijing, China for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Wilson currently owns a medical billing business which she and her mother Debi started soon after receiving her associate's degree from Golden West College in 1999.
