Lancers Win in Walk-Off Fashion for the Third Straight Game

RIVERSIDE --- There's a pattern forming at John C. Funk Stadium, as the Lancers won in walk-off fashion on Tuesday for the third consecutive game. Tied at three with CSUN entering the bottom of the seventh, CBU quickly loaded the bases, setting up Ashlee Annett to wear the hero's cape in the non-conference showdown.
Tuesday's victory, the Lancers fourth in a row, moves CBU to 28-12. CSUN, a conference foe of the Lancers when they join the Big West next season, is now 9-20.
CBU started the scoring in the bottom of the third when Matti Severns singled to second base. The throw skipped past the first baseman, allowing Jordyn Madrigal to race around third and tack on the game's first run. The next batter, Makayla Medellin, singled to centerfield, plating Severns.
CSUN then struck with their offense in the third as an error and a bunt single drove home two runs to level the score. The go-ahead run then crossed home in the sixth on a hard hit ball to shortstop, giving the Matadors a 3-2 lead.
The Lancers combatted the go-ahead run with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as a wild pitch scored Madrigal. The game then stretched into the seventh, setting up a chance for a CBU walk-off in the bottom half.
CBU loaded the bases with the first three batters, bringing up Annett to end the game. The senior did just that, singling up the middle to plate Kenzie Farrier-Pilon and end the game and give CBU the 4-3 win.
Severns led the Lancers with two of CBU's nine hits. Eight different Lancers recorded a hit in Tuesday's victory. Malachy Russell-Millen reached base three times, once via a hit, and the other two on walks.
Emily Darwin earned her seventh win of the year as she was the pitcher of record for the winning moment. Darwin tossed 1.1 shutout innings in relief. Annika Hollingsworth made the start and allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits over four innings. Madalyn Martin allowed one run in 1.2 innings of relief.
The Lancers return to conference action this weekend when Utah Tech comes to Riverside. The series begins with a doubleheader on Friday and concludes with a single game on Saturday. Friday's action will begin at 4:30 p.m.
