RIVERSIDE --- The wind was blowing out at a sold-out John C. Funk Stadium, and the Lancers cashed in as beneficiaries on Friday evening. Powered by five home runs, the Lancers swept day one with Utah Tech, extending CBU's win streak to six games.
CBU improves its record to 30-12 with the pair of victories. The Lancers are now 7-1 in conference action, keeping them in first place.
The hero of game one's 8-0 win was Riverside native Victoria Macias. Macias, playing in her first Division I season after spending her first two collegiate years at the Division II level, entered Friday without a home run this year. That changed in the second inning when Macias launched her first career Division I home run over the right-center field fence.
An inning later, Macias did it again, this time a two-run shot to right field.
The Lancers pushed across four runs in the third and followed it up with two more in the fourth. Needing a run in the fifth to end the game early, Kenzie Farrier-Pilon answered the call with a double down the rightfield line to plate Sydney Peterson.
Miranda De Nava earned the victory after four shutout innings. Utah Tech managed two hits off De Nava, who struck out eight Trailblazers. Emily Darwin tossed a shutout inning in relief.
De Nava would get the ball again to start game two, but this time the Trailblazers had an answer as they pushed across three runs on four hits in the opening frame. Two of those runs came on a home run to center field.
But the Lancers had an answer of their own in the bottom half, starting with two outs when Makayla Medellin hit a no doubt blast over the left field fence. The home run, her 11th, is a milestone moment for Medellin, as she now holds the CBU single-season home run record (Division I era).
One batter later, Ashlee Annett added a home run of her own to pull CBU within one.
Annett was not done there as she added a two-run double in the third that gave CBU a 4-3 lead. Two innings later, Annett left the yard again as he second home run of the day pushed CBU's lead to 6-3.
Darwin entered the circle in relief of De Nava to start the second inning and proceeded to mow down Utah Tech batters over six shutout frames. Darwin, now 8-4, allowed two hits and struck out five.
Farrier-Pilon ended the doubleheader 6-for-8. Annett finished 3-for-5 with six RBI and three runs scored. Medellin finished 3-for-7.
The series wraps up tomorrow as the Lancers look to pull out the brooms and capture a second consecutive conference series sweep. Saturday's first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
