IRVINE, Calif. ? California Baptist couldn't catch a break going from the NAIA's No. 1 to No. 2 in back-to-back contests, but it was the same result as the Lancers fell 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 27-25) to Concordia.
The loss marks the first time that the Lancers (19-6, 8-5) have lost back-to-back games to NAIA opponents since the 2006 season and it's also the first time CBU has lost back-to-back games more than once in a season since 2003.
Fei Shi was the only Lancer to hit over .300 and posted her eighth double-double of the year notching 16 kills and 10 digs. Mical Bell dished out 27 assists and Katrina Clark recorded 14 digs, as those two were the only other Lancers in double figures. Rene Simon posted six blocks while Shi and Colleen Sweeney each added three.
As a team, the Lancers hit .169 (37-15-130) while the Eagles hit .233 (53-22-133). CBU also lost the digs battle, 70-54, but out blocked Concordia, 9-5.
California Baptist took its only lead of the opening set on the first point after an Eagle error, but Concordia answered with the next two points and were off and running. The Eagles took their biggest leads of the set at 10-6 and 12-8, but the Lancers used a 3-0 run, after trailing 15-12, to tie it at 15. Sweeney started the run with a kill and Noelle Dyk brought the Lancers within one with her kill before Sweeney tied it up with her first ace of the set.
After a Concordia timeout, the Eagles answered scoring the next three, but momentum shifted again after CBU used a 4-1 run to tie it at 19. CUI answered again with three straight and never trailed again to take a 1-0 match lead.
Concordia looked to be putting the Lancers away early in the second set after running out to a 7-1 lead, but CBU answered with a 9-2 run of their own, that included a pair of kills from Dyk, to take a 10-9 lead. The Eagles reclaimed the lead pushed it to 14-12, but the Lancers later used a 4-0 run that included Sweeney's second ace of the match to take a 19-16 lead. CBU then watched the Eagles take a 2-0 match lead after they closed out the set with a 9-1 run.
In the final set, Concordia started to pull away with a 5-1 run that gave the Eagles a 13-8 lead and forced a CBU timeout. The Lancers got within one on six different occasions, with the last one coming at 23-22, before a Shi kill finally tied the game at 23 and forced a CUI timeout. The Eagles set up game point at 24-23 on a kill from Stephanie Scheele, but the Lancers answered with a kill from Shi and took advantage of a Concordia error to take their first set point of the match at 25-24. The momentum was short-lived as the Eagles closed the set and match with three straight points.
California Baptist will now try to rebound, Saturday, as it hosts Hope International for a 7 p.m. contest inside Van Dyne Gym.
