SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH ? California Baptist squandered away a 17-point first half lead with a cold shooting second half to fall 102-89 to the College of Idaho.
The Lancers (1-1) led 30-13 early in the first half and looked to be running away from the Yotes (3-1), but that was the most that COI trailed at any point in time during the game. CBU opened the first half shooting 58.3 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range, but CBU shot just 30.8 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from beyond the arc in the second half. California Baptist also turned the ball over 33 times.
Kendra Morris paced CBU with a team-high 20 points, including three treys. Both Nicole Davis and Bryana Williams each scored 16, and Williams pulled down 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the year. Heather Couzens also scored in double-figures with 13 points.
The Yotes were lead by Christon Vander Esch and Shanae Horner as the two combined for 47 points. Vander Esch, who averaged just over 17 points per game, scored a game-high 24 while Horner had the hot hand from the outside scoring 23. Vander Esch went 5-for-10 from the field and 14-for-18 at the charity stripe while Horner hit 4-for-8 from 3-point range. The Yotes as a team hit 60 percent from the field in the second half.
CBU led 35-21 with 6:12 left in the first half when the College of Idaho went on an 8-2 run to cut it to 37-29. The Lancers pushed it back to 49-37 with just 1:20 left before taking a 53-43 lead just before the half.
COI opened the second with a 14-2 run and forced seven CBU turnovers in a span of three minutes to take its first lead at 57-55. The Lancers regained the lead on a Couzens jumper at 59-58 and led 61-60 before a pair of Davis free throws sparked an 8-2 run as CBU climbed back out to a 69-62 lead.
CBU didn't lead by more than seven from that point on as the Yotes went on a 13-2 run to take the lead for good at 75-71. The Lancers cut it to three at 81-78 with 5:52 left, but an 11-3 run closed any doors of a possible comeback.
Of the 11 Lancers that played, nine scored, and of the 24 that played between the two teams, 20 at least scored two points.
California Baptist will have to turn around tomorrow and take on host No. 15 Westminster at 6 p.m. (MST). A tape-delay of the radio broadcast can be heard on KPRO 1570 AM at 7:30 p.m. (PST).
